Once more EURORZEPAK in Minikowo

18th of May 2017 Kujawsko-Pomorski Agricultural Advisory Centre in Minikowo (KPODR) together with National Association of Rapeseed and Protein Plants Producers (KZPRiRB) from Warsaw organized International Day of Rapeseed. The main topic of debate was: “European sources of protein, including rapeseed meal as alternative to soya import”. Farmers and representatives of national and international associations attended the debate. Debaters were: Karol Bujoczek – Editor in Chief of Top Agrar, Poland, which moderated the debate and Ryszard Kamiński – Director of KPODR w Minikowie, Matt Culley – Hampshire County Chairman NFU National Farmers Union – representative from England, Bogusław Rzeźnicki – Director of the Department of Plant Breeding and Protection, Ministry of Agriculture (Poland), Diter Bockey – UFOP Union zur Forderung von Oel und Proteinpflanzen – representative from Germany, Philippe Dusser – Secretary General EOA European Oilseed Alliance –  representative from France, Juliusz Młodecki – chairman of KZPRiRB.

Before discussion prof. dr hab. Iwona Bartkowiak-Broda from The Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute (IHAR) – National Research Institute, Department in Poznan made short introductory lecture to debate – “Innovations in use of rapeseed meal“. Professor explained importance of storage proteins in rapeseed – cruciferins and napins. Next she pointed out possibilities of use proteins in food purposes. Rapeseed proteins can be used in bakery, to make different beverages, as substitute for dairy products and as ingredient in production of dressings, sauces and taste additives. Rapeseed originating proteins can even be used in meat originating products. Wide possibilities of rapeseed proteins use exist in industry, among others for production of waterproof filters, surfactants and plastics. Professor also emphasized that soy originating proteins in larger amount could be replaced with rapeseed ones, among other uses in feeding ruminants and older groups of pigs.

Next speaker, Adam Stępień – General director of The Polish Association of Oil Producers presented topic “Biofuels as key factor of development and profitability of oil rape cultivation in Poland and the European Union”. Oil industry in Poland in amounts of over 60% covers demands of production bio components for fuels and supplies market with large amounts of valuable feed components in the form of meal and oil cake. It is worth to be aware that polish industry of biofuels is new branch and third producer of biodiesel in Europe. Annual record of biodiesel production in Poland was 850 thousand tons. Only this facts point out that all legal changes in European Union, with aim of reduction of first generation biofuels (among others rapeseed oil) affect heavily on our industry, agriculture and labour market.

Joint conclusions have been developed during the debate:

1. Increasing protein crops production in Poland and Europe may be agriculture’s response to the expectations of the consumers who prefer non-GMO products. But the further development should be supported by the climate and soil conditions.

2. Today, rapeseed grist is the largest and the most stable source of non-GMO feed protein in Poland and Europe.

3. It is necessary to extend the promotion of the use of rapeseed grist in animal feed as well as to conduct breeding activities aimed at improving its nutritional quality.

4. Rapeseed grist production volume is closely related to biodieselproduction. Any attempts at limiting it affect the supply of rapeseed grist, thus opening the market for soya import.

5. The requirement of greening led to increase in the production of various species of leguminous plants suitable for climate and soil conditions for cultivation. But there is a need to allow farmers to use the crop protection product to ensure the harvest will be used as raw-material for the feed (protein component) to stimulate the added value of protein balance in the EU.

6. In the last three years, we observed promising results of yielding non-GMO soya bean in Poland and Europe. It is therefore justified to support breeding activates and testing of the varieties in the development of cultivars adapted to climatic conditions.

During EURORZEPAK over 300 agricultural advisors and farmers growing winter rapeseed could exchange opinions with leading breeders of rapeseed and by theirs guidance inspect different cultivars on field demonstration in Experimental Station for Cultivar Testing (SDOO) in Chrąstowo.

Winter oilseed rape cultivars were presented by leading firms: HR Strzelce, HR Smolice, Euralis, Bayer, Rapool, Saatbau, Syngenta, KWS, Limagrain, ATR Agro Handel. Moreover there was possibility to talk to technicians and representatives of companies that had to offer equipment for precision rape sowing and harvesting, companies like: Agro-Land, Agrolmet, Raitech, Inter-Vax, Dramiński. It is worth to notice firms who had to offer technologies in plant protection and fertilization of rapeseed as: Yara, Invigo, Intermag, Syngenta, Bayer, BASF, Fertical, PSP. As well beekeeper farmer Kuś from nearby Nakło presented theirs apiaries and had to offer rapeseed honey.
